Maria McArdle

Senior Lecturer in Teacher Education - Mathematics specialism

Maria McArdle

I am passionate about mathematics: developing enjoyment, conceptual understanding and greater confidence for all teachers and learners.

After an initial career in Scotland, in ICT support at Strathclyde University, I received my PGCE (mathematics specialism) from the University of Nottingham and thus began my primary teaching career.

An experienced primary practitioner, I also have experience as a Head Teacher, Local Authority Mathematics Advisor and Senior ITT Primary Mathematics Lecturer.

I have worked within EYFS, KS1 and KS2 and in a secure unit with adults with complex needs. My research interests are outdoor learning, gender differences in attainment, and teachers’ and pupils’ confidence and anxieties and their relationship with attainment in mathematics.

I am an accredited Numicon and Inspire trainer, a PD accredited member of NCETM and a member of the Mathematics Association, serving on its joint MA/ATM Primary Committee.

I love having the opportunity to work with trainee teachers, colleagues and children nationally, sharing and fostering a love of learning (particularly in mathematics).
