PhD study can be undertaken on a full or part time basis, and topics need to align with the research expertise and priorities of the Safer Young Lives Research Centre and the Institute of Applied Social Research. See Areas of Study for more information.
The Institute of Applied Social Research offers two professional doctorate programmes
- Professional Doctorate in Children and Young People's Services
- Professional Doctorate in Systemic Practice
The Professional Doctorate programmes offer students with a background in professional practice a unique opportunity to study at the highest level, specialise in their area of interest and expertise and develop a research topic of their own choosing. Both programmes are applied, part-time, practice oriented and equivalent to a PhD.
The Professional Doctorate in Children and Young People’s Services offers research student opportunities to research a range of issues relating to children and young people's welfare, with specialist areas including youth justice, child sexual exploitation, child trafficking, social care, work with adolescents and children and families’ services.

The Professional Doctorate in Systemic Practice offers systemic practitioners an opportunity to study in-depth an aspect of their practice. The programme is led by systemic practitioners with professional doctorates and experience in first person practitioner research. and offers a range of workshops, conferences and other opportunities to engage with the wider systemic community.
