Reader in Maternal and Child Health, Director of the Maternal and Child Health Research Centre

Dr Shuby Puthussery is a Reader in Maternal and Child Public Health, and the Director of Maternal and Child Health Research Centre in the School of Society, Community and Health. She joined the University in October 2012 having previously held academic roles at the University of Greenwich, City University of London, University of Bielefeld Germany, and Rajagiri College of Social Sciences India.

Alongside her roles in the School of Society, Community and Health, Shuby serves as a joint Research Lead for the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Education.

Shuby leads and lectures on the Ethical and Legal Issues in Health Care and Health Care Commissioning units for the MSc Public Health programs in our Luton, Myanmar and Nations Guyana campuses. She is an experienced supervisor for research projects of MSc and PhD students and acts as an external examiner for PhD students on projects related to maternal and child public health.

With her extensive track record, Shuby holds a national and international reputation for conducting interdisciplinary applied research that focuses upon improving health outcomes and experiences for mothers and babies, especially those who are most vulnerable and disadvantaged. Shuby’s research has led to national and international collaborations on a number of successful research projects that have produced significant outputs for policy and practice in levelling up inequalities in maternal and infant health both in the UK and abroad. She has also conducted projects in related areas of sexual and reproductive health; parenting in early years; and nutrition in early years including pregnancy and childhood.

Shuby has methodological expertise in developing and conducting systematic reviews, mixed method longitudinal studies, qualitative primary studies, and evaluations of services and interventions. Her research was included in the University's submission for the UK Research Excellence Framework 2014 and 2021.

Shuby is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and regularly represents the University in maternal and child health expert panels and advisory boards of policy making bodies at global, national and local levels. She serves as an Academic Editor for the Journals of BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth and BMC Health, Population and Nutrition and is a regular peer reviewer for various national and international journals including Pediatrics, BMJ Open, Plos One, BMC Pregnancy and Child Birth, BMC Public Health, and Social Science and Medicine.

In addition to the Board membership of the Medical Research Council, Shuby regularly reviews grant applications for major UK funding bodies including the Economic and Social Research Council, Wellbeing of Women, UK Department for International Development, and the National Institute for Health Research.
