Background to the Centre for Physical Education, Sport and Human Movement

The Centre for Physical Education, Sport and Human Movement brings together researchers with a shared critical perspective on participation, policy and representation in and of sport, movement and physical activity in the community, in physical education and school sport, and in physical culture. Researchers in this area build on over a century of physical education research in Bedford.

Research in this centre is dedicated to three special interest groups in the areas of:

We contribute to awareness of the processes and structures that enable and constrain engagement with sport, movement and physical activity; and social issues connected with identity, inclusion and equity. We work to develop and evaluate sport and physical activity initiatives to improve participation of underrepresented or marginalised groups; teaching/coaching practice and policy; positive youth development; critical and cultural study of the body and gender; and the impact of mega-events.

A socially critical perspective is important to highlight diverse experiences and identities, engage critically with discourses surrounding the body, movement and participation and with this aim our research practice is underpinned by qualitative, critical, reflective and strengths-based inquiry, action research, appreciative inquiry, and narratives.
