Working thesis title

Factors of hypertension, metabolic syndrome and musculoskeletal injury risk in the Bedfordshire Police Force.

Abstract

I will be visiting Bedfordshire Police Force sites and conducting a variety of cardiovascular, metabolic, mobility and stress assessments for the purpose of investigating prevalent risk factors amongst the Bedfordshire Police Force. Comparisons will be drawn between frontline personnel and desk based personnel. This study will add to the current body of research surrounding the health status of emergency responders and the findings will provide feedback to the Bedfordshire Police Force for potential interventions to reduce long-term absenteeism and create a more physically robust cohort.

Research Questions

  • Are frontline personnel or desk based personnel at greatest risk of hypertension and metabolic syndrome?
  • What are the greatest contributing risk factors of hypertension, metabolic syndrome and musculoskeletal injury risk amongst the group?
  • What potential interventions can be highlighted as necessary to address prevalent risk factors?

About Me

I completed undergraduate studies in Applied Sports Science (Strength & Conditioning) at the University of Salford in 2012. I also undertook a season-long strength & conditioning/sports science internship at professional rugby team: Sale Sharks, during my final year.

Most recently, I have spent four years working in preventative health screening across; community, corporate and occupational health settings. This included conducting a variety of; cardiovascular, metabolic and occupation-specific assessments and providing counselling on results to clients, as well organising health promotion and awareness events.

This MSc by research combines my prior experience and is entry into my research area of interest which is the occupational health and fitness status of elite service personnel.

Outside of study, I am keen rugby player having represented my home club Lymm RFC in National League 3 and I enjoy participating in various fitness challenges.
