Five projects battling for a total of £55k from the Vice Chancellor’s Steps fund got the green light at this week’s Dragons’ Den event (8 December).

Thanks to the initiative, the University will host Luton’s very own film festival, set to take place over three days in October 2015.

Healthcare students are to benefit from a two-day conference hosted by the University’s budding nurses, as well as from the upgrade of the Student Simulation Clinic at Butterfield. The clinic, a suite aimed at preparing students for real-life theatres and wards, will see the introduction of new software and equipment.

Members of the Business School proposed a competition open to budding entrepreneurs from the University, in addition to the introduction of a yearbook available to all students from the faculty.

The highlight of the evening, though, was the rousing reception received by the proposal of the Luton International Short Film Festival, put forward by MA Creative Digital Film Production student Tasos Giapoutzis.

The event, which will feature short films and photo exhibitions from worldwide contributors, was praised for the number of work opportunities it opens up to students from across the University. As well as volunteering at the event itself, students will be afforded the chance to work on everything from the logo to trophy sculpturing.

All the projects were pitched to a team of ‘dragons’, made up of Vice Chancellor Bill Rammell, Bedfordshire Students’ Union’s Charlie Hughes, Associate Dean of Health and Social Sciences Judith Chappell, Director of Teaching and Learning Mark Atlay, and Rumnique Gill, Director for Student Experience

The whole evening, the latest in a series of Dragons’ Den events at the University, was filmed by Media Junction, a student project previously provided with Steps funding.

The deadline for the next event is 30 January, with shortlisted proposals going on to pitch for funding on 18 February.
