A group of University of Bedfordshire students have given a helping hand to organise this year’s Bedford River Festival.

One of the biggest free family festivals in the UK, taking place on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 July, the much anticipated bi-annual occasion offers a vibrant mix of live entertainment, river events, parade, funfair and fete on the Embankment, River Great Ouse and in Russell Park.

As part of the University’s sponsorship agreement with the River Festival, which attracted more than 230,000 spectators in 2012, Event Management students at Bedfordshire have undertaken internships, assisting with the planning of the event. Additionally they’ll help to ensure the smooth functioning of the event over the two days.

David Seaton, Head of Student Recruitment at the University, said: “The University is such an integral part of the Bedford community, so we’re extremely excited to be in partnership with the Bedford River Festival. It is a truly special event, bringing the whole town together in a unique way.

“As well as the internship opportunities, we’re looking forward to recruiting potential new students at the Festival. Over 1,100 students from the Bedford area study at the University of Bedfordshire and we’re committed to building on that number.”

The University will also be entering their ‘’Barracudas” team – combined of students and staff – into the Festival’s Dragon Boat Race. Over 30 crews of 16-20 paddlers will battle against each other over a 350 metre course along the River Great Ouse.

Dr Bryna Chrismas, Lecturer in Exercise Physiology and leader of this year’s University of Bedfordshire dragon boat crew, said: “We have a tough act to follow. But with a blend of new and old recruits – who are held in very high regard – hopefully we can live up to expectations. We are very much looking forward to competing together.”

The University is also sponsoring the Sports Village at the River Festival, featuring a martial arts area, sports demonstrations from local clubs and the chance to sample canoeing and kayaking.
