Two University of Bedfordshire students, Sophie Fowkes and Holger Kilumets have been chosen to exhibit their work in a group exhibition at MK Gallery.

The exhibition, Platform features work from graduating students throughout the region. Free to enter, it previews Thursday 4 September, 6pm to 8pm and then runs until 28 September.

The Platform project aims to develop ways for artists to further their practice following graduation. Each gallery submits the work of one graduate who will be considered for the Platform Award 2014, comprising a £2,500 financial award and a year of mentoring from an experienced art professional.

Sophie Fowkes and Holger Kilumets both studied BA in Photography and Video Art at University of Bedfordshire.

Holger Kilumets’ body of work entitled Maps & Territories is a series of slightly disparate images, designed to relate to each other through the notion of free association

“The course taught me to think critically, broadened my knowledge of contemporary art practice and most importantly had a huge impact on my development both as an art practitioner and a person.

“I think that the personal attention and support the tutors are willing to give on this course is extremely valuable and quite unique. The fantastic one-to-one tutorials and crit sessions really help to bring the best out of you,” said Holger.

Sophie Fowkes is a performative artist. Using a range of media such as video, photographs, and appropriated footage, her work draws inspiration from ideas and concepts that relate directly to personal identity and experience. Sophie’s final degree show investigated ‘false memories’, in particular how colour and colour preferences relate to memories and childhood experiences.

“Any student studying photography and video art should try out video. The course at the University of Bedfordshire has changed me and extended my skills. I am inspired to carry on with my studies, “said Sophie.

Platform is at MK Gallery from 5 - 28 September 2014. It features the following students' work: Sophie Fowkes; Holger Kilumets; Suzannah Holford; Jacob Austin; Maxwell Kirwin; James Haggas
