A senior lecturer in Art and Design and an established artist from the University Bedfordshire explored ideas of freedom and control in her latest exhibition at the Luton campus.

The exhibition, called Withdraw, was made up of artwork that was created by Mo Lea, using chalks, pencil crayons and inks.

“The objects in the images were used to restrain and retain that which they surrounded.  The constrained have withdrawn, leaving the object in ignorant isolation. They belong to a past narrative of the relationship between predator and prey,” said Mo.

The pieces were produced over the summer of 2016 and were created through direct observation of natural forms and the use of geometry to draw manufactured objects more accurately.

“The items are isolated and contained within their frame.  This renders them motionless and unable to cause harm. This exhibition celebrates the joy of observational drawing, allowing peaceful contemplation as I redefine my past.”

Withdraw follows Mo’s previous exhibition Extant, at the Hat factory in Luton in 2014, which was a collection of drawings, photographs and etchings of fossils and other archaeological objects and animals.

The exhibition will be on display in the ground floor of the campus centre until Tuesday 8th November.
