Going to university is a big step and can seem a bit overwhelming, but a little preparation will go a long way to making the transition easier.

Assistant Director Student Experience & Head of Student Services at the University of Bedfordshire Ruki Heritage gives her top tips for navigating through the first few weeks.

1. Stock up on the essentials

Find out where your nearest supermarket is and stock up on essentials. Make sure fresh fruit, vegetables, pasta and healthy snacks are on your list to keep your energy up during Freshers’ Week and the start of term. Master a few quick and easy recipes before going to university so you’ll have something to fall back on. Takeaways and eating out might be tempting, but you’ll want to keep an eye on your budget.

2. Get your finances in order

Many banks offer student bank accounts which often come with a 0% overdraft that gives students a penalty-free loan to dip in and out of in emergencies. Many banks also offer freebies like rail cards. Shop around and find out which one works for you. Remember there may be some up-front costs you’ll need to pay, like deposits on rental properties, hall accommodation fees, down-payments on travel season tickets and buying text books. It’s tempting to go on a spending spree but don’t do it!

3. Get to know your new home

Explore your new surroundings as much as you can before you move there. Find out where the cinema is, or where your favourite shops are, and where these are in relation to your halls. Take a look at public transport links too. It is also worth registering with a GP’s surgery as soon as you can, rather than leaving it until you’re unwell.

4. Don’t be afraid to ask for help

If you are having difficulties of any kind, don’t keep them to yourself. Whether you’re having money worries or struggling with an assignment deadline, come and talk the Student Support team. They are there to help you and can offer all sorts of advice. Even if the problem is nothing to do with your studies, Student Support can point you in the right direction and help you through whatever is worrying you. Remember you are not on your own and we call want you to succeed and be happy.
