A first year student has said that securing a place at University of Bedfordshire through Clearing meant she was able to live nearer her family – a choice she’s described as a “blessing in disguise” following Covid19.

It isn’t uncommon for students to change their minds mid-course or after starting their first or second year of study. Different things can impact on a person’s original career path or chosen subject area and the University of Bedfordshire encourages students to talk to student support if they ever find themselves in this position.

This situation is something which 21 year old Janel found herself in one year ago. After completing a foundation year at another university, she realised she wanted to study something else.

She contacted the Clearing team to discuss her options around switching universities and was soon accepted on to a course with the University’s Business School.

Her decision to move universities (and locations) meant that Janel was able to return to her part-time job at Luton Airport and join the Bedfordshire Bulls cheerleading squad – something which has led her to make lifelong friends in the local area.

Being at Beds has enabled some self-discovery in regards to how I learn and my career prospects.

Janel recently spoke to BBC Look East about her Clearing experience. She wants future students and applicants to know how useful Clearing can be and how easy it is to apply…

Tell us about yourself

My name is Janel Grant. I am 21 years old, a Luton resident and currently a first year student studying Business Studies with Marketing BSc (Hons).

Why did you decide to go through Clearing?

I was originally studying at a different university on a different course. After a year, I wanted to change my course as I decided that it wasn’t for me and I found it difficult to get a good standard of work submitted. As the course I was studying included a foundation year, it meant that with the framework the university had in place, I would have had to re-do the year again, making my course five years long (instead of four).

After talking to my parents and doing some research, I decided that my best option was to move to another university.

How did you feel on the day?

As Clearing had already started when I arrived at my decision to move, I was extremely anxious – I couldn’t even sleep I was so scared. Once the Clearing lines were open, I called and explained my situation and what course I wanted to do. The operator was very helpful and ensured I got the information I needed.

I was made an offer on the condition that I sent the relevant documentation (proof of results and proof of ID) when prompted. It was that simple, so I didn’t need to worry. I got an email asking for the documentation the following day – and the day after that my place was confirmed!

Are you happy with your choice to come through Clearing?

Coming to Beds allowed me to stay closer to home, transfer back to my job at the airport and to join the Bedfordshire Bulls Cheerleading team where I met some great people. Being at Beds has enabled some self-discovery in regards to how I learn and my career prospects. The mental health team has helped so much during the current climate and being closer to home was a blessing in disguise.

What advice do you have for students entering Clearing this year?

  • Talk to your parents, sixth form/college teachers or a trusted adult about your plans – but ultimately this decision should be yours and yours alone.
  • Do your research – look at what your options are, research a prospective course and look into student finance, accommodation, the location, facilities and sports, etc. You want to be comfortable whilst you study as you will be living there for the next 3+ years.
  • Don’t panic, the operators are there to help you. They understand that you may be nervous so will do their best to help you.
  • Join student/applicant chats on Facebook (run by the university). They are a great way to get information first hand on what is happening at the university.
  • If you are wanting to join a sports team or society, follow them on social media to find out information on try-outs and joining, or even to ask them about what it is like at university.

Whatever you decide, Good Luck!
