A Business School lecturer at the University of Bedfordshire has recently discussed the benefits of postgraduate study with Beds’ LinkedIn community.

2020 has proven to be a challenging year so far, leaving many recent graduates unsure about their next steps or plans for the future.

However Giles Robertson, Lecturer in Marketing, says that lockdown will have given students a chance to reflect and consider their options after graduating from university, including further study to help increase their skillset and knowledge.

Thinking back to his time as a Masters student, Giles Robertson, Lecturer with  the University of Bedfordshire’s Business School - who also teaches the ‘Brand Communications and Reputation Management’ postgraduate unit - has listed his top benefits of and recommendations for postgraduate study.

Flexing those all-important brain muscles in new ways is always good. Asking questions of your subject, learning and reflecting to new depths, with ideas you may have never had. Do the theories and models go far enough; are there new models and approaches?

What sets you apart in life and work is being able to connect ideas, coming up with new ways of doing things – some will fail and some may fly.  Having a ‘test lab’ such as in PG study is critical for developing this kind of thinking.

It is different thinking that drives our economies, smart thinking – seeing your way through data, connecting the un-connectable, spotting patterns; these skills could be yours and are essential for our modern-day economy to thrive.

It might not be top of your wish list, but it is very good experience to meet new people from other companies and cultures and explore ideas in a safe environment. To develop your resilience in discussing your thoughts and ideas with new people, and also the opportunity for creating lasting partnerships and collaboration.

I studied my Masters part-time at City University, London, whilst working full-time as the Head of Marketing at Trinity Laban (the largest dance conservatoire in Europe), who supported me in my studies. More than anything, it gave me the time out to consider myself and understand what further value I could bring.
