Third-year undergraduate student, Keely Smith, has raised over £500 for Cancer Research UK after completing a day-long, fixed bike cycle at the University of Bedfordshire.

Keely – who is studying Sport & Exercise Science at the University’s Bedford campus – took on the challenge this month to help make a difference by increasing awareness of the charity amongst her peers and raising funds which will aid further research towards the fight against cancer.

Explaining further why she chose this charity, Keely said: “This year I have had two people close to my heart who have been diagnosed with cancer, one being a close relative – a grandad figure to me – who was diagnosed with stage four prostate cancer, and a family friend who was diagnosed with stage two breast cancer.

“In the past, I've also had a lot of people in my family who have battled a variety of different cancers, including brain tumours and breast, cervical, lung, bone and blood cancers. Luckily they all pulled through and survived this dreadful disease.”

During the 24-hour cycle which took place in the gym of her on-campus student accommodation, she spoke to family on FaceTime and her friends joined her in person to cheer her on and keep her motivated – plus she watched lots of TV, particularly Disney films!

Kevin Wyld, Senior Lecturer in Physiology, praised Keeley’s efforts. He said: “Keely has done an excellent job of raising funds for charity. Previously she raised over £150 by having a campus cake sale, where she made all the cakes herself!”

In the future, Keely plans to take on more charity events including a Tough Mudder or Colour Run, as well as arranging more bake sales.

Keely has proudly succeeded her GoFundMe goal but donations are still open for anyone who would like to support her in this fantastic accomplishment.
