An academic from the University of Bedfordshire has co-authored a new pocket guide which is the first of its kind to cover the clinical practice of all four fields of nursing – adult, child, learning disability and mental health.

Written to benefit both trainees and professionals, ‘The Clinical Pocket Reference for Nursing Associates’ was written by Laura Guest, Senior Lecturer in Nursing and Health Education, alongside a former colleague, Charlotte Craig, and will be available from 15th May 2023.

The book is currently the only Nursing Associate text that includes specifics of care for all four fields of nursing and is designed with direct clinical practice in mind. The authors hope that the book will allow nurses to access the information quickly and easily with clear signposting to each field.

Speaking about the new publication, Laura said: “We are very excited to see this book published - we see it as a repository that brings together essential knowledge from across the lifespan which recognises that Nursing Associates work across multiple fields. This book ensures that Nursing Associates have the essential knowledge they need at their fingertips to monitor, deliver and reassess essential care.”

Topics covered throughout the book include safeguarding, end of life care and mental health for both adults and children. Due to Laura and Charlotte’s extensive background working with Nursing Associate students, the text was written with an emphasis on breaking down complex terminology.

The book was recently showcased at the Royal College of Nursing Education Forum and obtained glowing reviews, receiving pre-orders from several hospitals and universities ahead of a launch party on International Nurses Day (12th May).

Dr Sally Boyle, Head of the School of Nursing, Midwifery & Health Education, congratulated Laura on her publication: “Laura has provided an excellent and unique resource for Nursing Associate students which will be an invaluable source to support our students.  We will be including this in the essential text for our teaching. It is a significant achievement on top of a busy academic role.”
