Become a PAL Leader

Becoming a PAL Leader is likely to be one of the most rewarding and valuable experiences that you will have whilst being a student at University of Bedfordshire.

As an experienced student who has already been through the first year (and survived it!), you will be in a unique position to pass on your wisdom, experiences and tips to those who are new to the University.

The most important attributes a PAL Leader needs are empathy and approachability; a friendly face that has been through what new students are going though.

Most recruitment takes place during February-April (though we do accept later applications); all students interested in becoming a leader should apply via the registration form (on the 'Apply' page). You will then be contacted and asked to attend a recruitment session before the summer break.

You must attend training prior to formally signing up and becoming a PAL Leader. At this training you'll get your PAL hoodie and other goodies! We expect initial training to take place in April/May, with follow-up training on planning and running PAL sessions in September.

What qualities and attributes do I need to become a PAL Leader?

When we recruit students to become PAL Leaders we need students to be able to demonstrate the following qualities and attributes:

  • Competent performance and good attendance on the first year of the course
  • Empathy with the first year experience; friendly and non-judgemental
  • An interest in people and how they learn
  • Good communication, listening and interpersonal skills
  • Good self-organisational skills
  • Ability to model and demonstrate good study habits
  • Possession of other qualities such as reliability, credibility, commitment, honesty and approachability
  • A team player

You do not necessarily need to be expert in all of these things, as PAL and the training we give you will help you to develop and improve.

What we do need to see is that you have the enthusiasm to put your heart and soul into PAL, the commitment to sticking with the programme for the year, and willingness to get the most out of the experience.

What will I get out of being a PAL Leader?

  • Development of personal and employability skills such as leadership, organising, listening, interpersonal communication, team working, facilitation and presentation skills
  • Provide you with valuable experience to enhance your CV and future job prospects
  • University Certificate to recognise your input into the PAL Leader scheme
  • The opportunity to gain Associate Fellow status with the Higher Education Academy
  • PAL will provide you with the opportunity to undertake the PAL Leader CPD programme to help develop your employability skills
  • Great personal satisfaction from helping others
  • It will enable you to gain confidence and to develop your presentation skills
  • Make new friends and contacts from your PAL group and from the wider PAL Leader community at the University
  • A PAL hoodie and other goodies!
