As English is the official language of many international bodies (e.g. EU, NATO), businesses and IT as well as the world media, it is no wonder that it remains the most popular choice of second language worldwide for non-English speakers.

Specialist knowledge

The Centre for Research in English Language Learning and Assessment's (CRELLA) specialist knowledge in pedagogy, language assessment and literacy helps to improve language education internationally.

Working closely alongside decision makers, CRELLA enhances language education by strengthening links between language learning, teaching and assessment.

We empower governments and educational bodies to provide innovative English Language education.

CRELLA’s Socio-Cognitive Framework (SCF) was adopted by English Profile (EP), a long-term programme to provide the Council of Europe with Reference Level Descriptions that more fully define proficiency levels for English language education and assessment.

It was selected for use in the European Survey on Language Competences funded by the European Commission and was praised for its practical models of language skills as cognitive processes and for refining a description of progress.

The SCF has been extensively used by CRELLA staff members as the theoretical and practical basis for professional development and training courses worldwide.

Their internationally acclaimed research is feeding into effective teaching and learning of English at different educational levels – from basic English to university.
