Where will I live?

Most students choose to live in the NHS accommodation based at High Wycombe, Stoke Mandeville or Wexham Park hospital but there are also options with private providers near the hospital sites.

How much is accommodation?

Rents range from £350 per calendar month to £599.20 per calendar month depending on the provider and facilities.

How much will I need to pay in advance?

For the NHS accommodation you will need to pay two months’ rent in advance and one month's rent as a damage deposit. This means you will always be one month in credit until the last month of your contract rather than arrears.

For private providers you will need to pay one month's rent in advance and one month's rent as a damage deposit.

What is included in my rent?

In the NHS accommodation rent includes all utility bills, WiFi, and parking. Parking is free at the accommodation sites but a permit is required. This permit does not cover parking in the hospital car parks.

For private providers listed on the website the rent includes utility bills but parking and WiFi are not included.

Contents insurance is not included at any of the properties and we recommended that you arrange this directly. The National Union of Students recommends Endsleigh Insurance

As a full-time student you will be exempt from Council Tax but depending on the landlord you may need to apply for this exemption yourself via the local council (either online or by completing a form).

How will I pay my rent?

Rent must be paid monthly either by direct debit or over the phone by credit/debit card, depending on the provider.

How do I apply for accommodation?

The accommodation providers will ask you to complete an application form before allocating you a specific room.

Will I have to sign a contract?

You will have to sign an Assured Shorthold Tenancy Agreement which will be for a minimum of six months. This is a legally binding agreement between you and the landlord. Your rights and those of the landlord will be explained in this agreement.

When can I move in?

Your contract will set out the date from which the agreement will commence and as long as you have signed and sent back your contract and any advance rent payments and deposits have been paid, then you will be able to move in from this date. Your accommodation provider will contact you directly to confirm how to collect your keys.

Is there Wi-Fi?

Wi-Fi is included at the NHS accommodation sites but you will need to liaise with the accommodation team to request access.

In private accommodation you would need to arrange Wi-Fi individually as this is not included in the rent.

What do I need to bring?

You will need supply your own bedding, towels, cooking utensils, plates and cutlery etc.

If you are bringing any electrical appliances these need to have an up to date PAT (Portable Appliance Test) or be under two years old. The use of electrical appliances should be restricted to allow everyone to use them without overloading the systems and should be unplugged when not in use.

In NHS accommodation all your furniture will be provided in your room and kitchen. You will be able to have a separate fridge in your room at Harrington House but not at Hillview.

In private providers, the majority of room are furnished but it is best to check directly about what is provided.

Can I bring my car?

At Harrington House parking is included. You must have a permit but is included in your rent however spaces are limited.

At Hillview there is a small parking charge and spaces are limited, a permit must be obtained.

Private providers may or may not have parking available.

Can I bring pets?

No, pets are not permitted in any of the accommodation.

Is there a TV?

There is no communal TV but you can bring your own, however you will need to obtain a TV license.

Who cleans the accommodation?

In the NHS Accommodation you will be responsible for cleaning your own bedroom.

You will need to clean and wash your pots in the kitchen but general kitchen cleaning is done by the cleaning team. If you leave dirty pots in the kitchen these will be removed to a separate box so the cleaning team can carry out their duties.

The cleaning team will also clean the bathrooms but you need to leave then in a reasonable condition and take any belongings with you.

In private accommodation you will be responsible for cleaning all areas of your accommodation.

Can I change my room if I am not happy?

Room changes can be requested and are subject to availability. A charge may apply depending on the circumstances of the request.
