Graduation Ceremonies - November 2018

Ordinarily by this time of the year we would have advised all our students expecting to attend the November Graduation Ceremonies of the details, and invited them to apply for tickets. I am sorry this has been delayed by a week or so.

We have however recently learned that the usual venue, St Mary’s Church, Luton, where again we have our reservation, is undergoing works to improve the heating and these will not be completed on time. It means the church is now not available for us to use.

The Graduations team have been working urgently to explore other facilities that might be used as an alternative venue to provide our graduating students and their guests with a high-quality ceremony experience during the same week. Having considered all the options, we are sure that our chosen facility, Venue 360, will fulfil all our needs. Additionally it is conveniently located less than a mile from our Luton Campus. Final administrative arrangements are in course and will be announced later. However it is likely that ceremonies will be held across three days, Wednesday 14th – Friday 16th November.

Individual invitations to students eligible to participate will be emailed on 18 September. Invitations will include information about the ceremony dates on which graduates from each Faculty and School/Department may attend. There is no charge for graduates attending their own ceremonies. Details will also be supplied of how to buy tickets for guests via our online store; the option of two tickets is guaranteed to all graduates provided they are booked by the deadline that will be given. The correct academic dress is required for all graduates wishing to participate and details of how this may be hired from our usual supplier will be given.

We anticipate that demand for attending these ceremonies will be high in relation to capacity and if any eligible graduate would prefer to defer their attendance until our next round of ceremonies in the first week of April 2019, when we expect to be back at St Mary’s Church, we will be pleased to accommodate them. Again details of how to select this option will be in our individual mailings.

Students studying at partner campuses overseas will be invited to April 2019 ceremonies when we have the capacity to accommodate them at our usual venue. There will be no delay to the conferment of degrees which will take place at Examination Boards. Degree certificates will be available as normal and will be supplied via local Institutional partners, without need to wait until April.

The Graduations team are now working hard to complete preparations for delivery of the revised ceremony programme. It would be helpful if enquiries meantime can held back pending issue of invitations so the organisation work can continue. Regrettably we will not be able to answer any questions about the precise day and time of particular ceremonies before emailed invitations are sent. However any other urgent and essential questions may be sent to graduation@beds.ac.uk. They will be dealt with as soon as possible.
