Application Forms & Online Applications

Introduction

While some employers will request a CV for job applications, others may ask for an application form, and in some instances you will need to provide both.

Types of applications

There are two types of application form - paper based and online. The following details are usually required:

  • name, address, contact details
  • educational institutions attended
  • qualifications
  • previous and current work experience
  • current salary/earnings
  • visa status (eligibility to work in the UK)
  • referees

Some forms will also leave a space for you to write a personal statement evidencing why you would be suitable for the job.

This is where you can sell yourself by including details of previous experience and the relevant skills that you could bring to the workplace.

This section should be tailored to the job you are applying for, taking into account what is required for the post.

Top tips

  • Follow instructions; ie do you need to attach other documents/certificates etc?
  • Check the closing date and ensure the form is submitted by this date
  • Keep a copy in case you are invited to interview. The employer may ask questions based on what you have written on the form so remind yourself beforehand!
  • As mentioned above, tailor the application form to each job
  • Don't wait until the last minute; a good application form can take time to prepare
  • Ask someone else to check the form for you. A second opinion often helps! Our advisers can provide feedback - Get Advice
