Studying Art and Design with us

The art and design department has gone from strength to strength over the last few years and this was reflected when we went up over 30 places in the recent university league table of art and design departments in the Guardian newspaper.

Studying in the department will give you personal access to a young and creative team of successful practitioners and academics who regularly publish, design and exhibit Nationally and Internationally, in art and design and, the creative industries. All are dedicated to teaching and the privileges this brings.

Our courses provide a rigorous and supportive academic framework for your studies whilst equally providing access to the professional networks which our staff maintain and work within.

The courses strongly reflect our belief in the professional world of 'work' and we pride ourselves, not only on our high graduate employment figures, but on how our teaching and projects reflect the vibrant practices of contemporary art, design and fashion.

Wide range of options in year 1 and 2

In your first year, lectures, seminars, studio based teaching and, one-to-one tutorials introduce you to a wide range of skills and practices in art and design. Our Key Skills programme, which runs in year one and two, gives you access to a range of skills from which to choose from - including silkscreen printing,Computer Aided Design, life and technical drawing, printmaking, laser cutting and 3D modelling, typography, pattern cutting, and photography. (The list of skills expands each year as we respond to the needs of employers and the industry you hope to work for).

The skills and thinking you learn in your first year help develop your confidence, personal style and thinking; allowing you to enter the second year, full of ideas and creative know-how.

Presenting your work to the public

All your hard-work comes to fruition at the end of the third year in a nerve-wracking but exhilarating public graduation show. Here you are given the opportunity to present your work to the public, friends and family, and prospective employers in a curated show of your final project.

There will be many other opportunities (and skills) made available to you during the course, which will help you develop into a professional, employable and creative practitioner.

All our undergraduate programmes have strong relationships with the creative industries, and all provide an inspiring, empowering and enjoyable route to reaching the ultimate attainment in your career aspirations.

Good luck in whichever creative adventure you choose. To see what we do in the Division and to get all our latest news go to our blog We Create Together
