A former student presenter at the University of Bedfordshire's community radio station has been nominated for a national award, whilst it has also been announced that the station is to stay on local radio waves for another five years.

For the second year on the trot, Radio LaB 97.1fm’s Danny Fullbrook is up for Best Male Presenter at the Student Radio Awards.

Danny won silver at last year’s prestigious awards, which are supported by BBC Radio 1 and Global, and is hoping to take top place this time round at the do on Thursday 6 November.

The 21-year-old who finished his studies on the Media Production course at the University earlier this year has submitted recordings of his shows from his time as a student manager on the station.

Now a Freelance Broadcast Assistant, Danny said: “I enjoyed my three years on Radio LaB, it was a fantastic part of the University course I was on and really helped with my studies.

“To be nominated once again is absolutely fantastic and I hope I can go one step further than last year.”

Terry Lee, Radio LaB Coordinator, said: “Danny is a very gifted broadcaster, and I am not surprised at all by his nomination for a Student Radio Award for the second year in a row. Regardless of whether he wins or not, everyone at Radio LaB is incredibly proud of Danny. He is all set for a successful career in the radio industry."

Danny’s nomination arrives at the same time as Radio LaB being awarded five year community radio licence extension, allowing the station to broadcast on 97.1fm until April 2020.

Community Radio stations are asked to fulfil ‘social gain objectives’, which are agreed by both the stations and Ofcom, and are asked to serve a target community.

And Terry added he was “delighted to announce that Radio LaB will continue to entertain Luton and the University of Bedfordshire students until 2020”.

“We intend to use this great news as a springboard to further improve Radio LaB, both in our broadcast output and by using the power of radio to improve the lives of young people, creating more opportunities than ever before for the radio stars of the future,” he said.
