CVDA

The Centre for Visualisation and data analytics (CVDA) has undertaken research in visualisation, data analysis and computer graphics for over 20 years. It specialises in developing visualisation solutions to real-world problems and has been particularly active in the area of medical applications. It has extensive knowledge and experience of GPU algorithms through research. It has been involved over 30 internationally funded projects (including projects in FPs 4,5,6,7) over the last 14 years, 8 of these as Project Coordinator. CVDA is housed in a new, purpose-built lab which opened in September 2016

People

• Dr Enjie Liu, Reader in Network Applications, is Head of CVDA. Dr Liu pursues research spanning CVDA and SSWT. Within CVDA, her recent work has concentrated on web services and ontologies within the context of biomedical systems. She is currently PI in the CARRE project which is investigating co-morbidities, in particular cardio-renal problems

The CVDA Laboratory

Visual analytics and data mining is currently our main research direction. Other related research interests include web mining, computer vision, image processing and computer graphics. We are working on:

• Digital Healthcare and leading research activities in exploring innovative technologies to support the reshape of future healthcare via promoting patient empowerment and self-management for general health and chronic conditions. We have also been actively involved in research activities in digital health that are related to computer assisted diagnosis, clinical decision support, in-silico medicine and digitalization of health records.
• Meanwhile, We are also interested in Creative Computing, in which we are leading research activities in promoting human creativity in scientific research by utilising empowered data mining of rich sets of web resources. All of these works involve a significant amount of effort in data mining and machine learning to support knowledge discovery the domain applications.
• Information Access and Retrieval (IAR) to enable us to build information systems that can support a user’s information needs more effectively and efficiently.

Most of the CVDA staff members are engaged in project work involving the CVDA Lab. Currently, the CVDA Lab accommodates 16 research staff (with a further vacancy yet to be filled) who are working on 5 EC projects and 1 EPSRC project, some of which will continue until 2018.

The Lab received its first UK research council funding in 1987, from SERC (the predecessor to EPSRC), and it has been in continuous receipt of external funding ever since, in general from the European Commission. In fact, overall it has been involved in 28 EC-funded projects within Frameworks 4, 5 6, 7 and H2020, in addition to 5 research council projects, and other activities funded by the Royal Society, the British Council, INTAS, PCFC, and charitable bodies.

In total, 47 successful proposals have been submitted to external funding bodies, which have generated an associated income for CVDA of over £7.5 million.

The CVDA Lab is proud to collaborate with a broad range of partners – academic institutions, including leading universities worldwide such as Oxford, UCL, Stanford, ETHZ, Zhejiang, Auckland, etc.; healthcare providers, including leading hospitals such as Moorfields, Mayo Clinic, Charité (Berlin), Niguarda (Milan), etc.; research institutions such as INRIA; supercomputer centres such as CINECA; and industrial companies, ranging from large multinational companies such as Philips, through niche-market technological companies such as Ansys, Kitware, Invatec, etc., to SMEs, both local and in Europe such as Imagemetry (Czech Republic), Astrid (Hungary). It has always had a strong international character, with past and present members coming from 16 countries; its collaborations span more than 30 countries in 4 continents.
