About the course
This course explores the provision of evidence-base and innovative holistic care of the newborn, and relates these elements to the provision of high-quality care for their families within the neonatal high dependency and intensive care environment. It is designed to be a stand-alone unit for anyone having previously completed the Special of the Newborn unit or equivalent, or as the second phase of the qualified in speciality (QIS) program.
with Professional Practice Year
This course has the option to be taken over four years which includes a year placement in industry. Undertaking a year in industry has many benefits. You gain practical experience and build your CV, as well as being a great opportunity to sample a profession and network with potential future employers.
There is no tuition fee for the placement year enabling you to gain an extra year of experience for free.

With our guidance and support you’ll get up to speed within one year, and will be ready to seamlessly progress on to undergraduate study at Bedfordshire.
The Foundation Year provides an opportunity to build up your academic writing skills and numeracy, and will also cover a range of subject specific content to fully prepare you for entry to an Undergraduate degree.
This is an integrated four-year degree, with the foundation year as a key part of the course. You will need to successfully complete the Foundation Year to progress on to the first year of your bachelor’s degree.

Intensive And High Dependency Care Of The Newborn
During the process of transition to extrauterine life, a newborn will experience the most complex and dynamic physiological adaptation. For most newborns babies the transition is uneventful yet about 10% of all babies born will experience a degree of significant physiological compromise.
This unit is designed to ensure that health care professionals develop the skills required to care for premature and sick newborns within the critically acute setting. This unit explores the provision of evidence-based innovative holistic care, including Therapeutic Hypothermia, Nitric Oxide and ventilation strategies for these newborns and relates these elements to the provision of high-quality care for their families within the High Dependency and Intensive Care environment.
The content of the unit is aligned with the British Association of Perinatal Medicines’ (BAPM) Knowledge and Skills Framework descriptors for Qualified in Speciality. Completion of both this unit and the Special Care of the Newborn unit will result in being Qualified in Speciality as set out by BAPM
There are a combination of assessments, both formative and summative. The summative assessments include an OSCE and a portfolio of evidence of learning. There is also a practice skills log that is completed in the workplace.
Careers
This course will result in the title qualified in speciality which is a recognised title across the UK in any Neonatal Care setting. Following this course, alumni will be eligible to explore promotion opportunities within this setting.
