  • Benefit from a wide range of learning and teaching methods including small group workshops, micro teaching, action learning sets, cases studies, presentations, critical incident analysis, and individual and group work.

Unit Information – What Will I Learn?

The Postgraduate Certificate in Dental Law and Ethics is obtained by completing two core units:

  • Dental Law in Practice
  • Ethical Dental Practice

How will I be assessed?

Your assessments incorporate both assessment of learning (summative) and assessment for learning (formative) elements. Formative assessment is through the submission of draft work for feedback. Formative assessment provides opportunities to develop and test out ideas with peers and tutors, in preparation for the summative work.

The tasks are designed to allow you to rehearse the types of thinking behaviours (analysis, critique, and argumentation) that are necessary for the summative work, with tutor and peer support and feedback.

There are three assessments for dental law in practice unit and another two assessments for ethical dental practice unit.

Entry requirements

This postgraduate course is open to individuals who have a first degree (or equivalent qualification or experience  assessed by an interview) in dentistry, dental nursing and allied dental professions.

How will this course enhance my career prospects?

Graduates apply their new knowledge into their own practice, adapting their staff training and introducing new ideas into their day to day patient management. Others may pursue more studies by taking a Postgraduate Diploma or MA in Dental Law and Ethics.

Some of our graduates already secured part-time positions as dental advisors with defence organisations.

The course enables you to adopt a critical stance to your own and others’ practice and to propose ways to enhance patient care through legal and ethical practice.

This is the only university accredited PgCert in Dental Law and Ethics within the UK that is specific to dental staff. The course focuses on enabling dentists to work with professionally relevant legal and ethical principles and to consider the ways in which these principles influence their everyday practice
