What will you study?
Studying our Business Management BSc (Hons) course will equip you with in-depth skills and knowledge in the combined areas of business management and digital marketing. Embedded within the course design is an opportunity for you to develop research skills, employability skills, analytical and problem-solving skills, professional and responsible behaviours, and be transformed into knowledgeable and effective managers in any working environment. In your first year, you will receive support in our Beginning Your Professional Business Journey unit, which will help ease your transition into university and provide insight into professional business environments. In Evolution and Revolution of Business, you will explore how businesses operate, develop, progress and impact society while examining how certain business trends have evolved over time. At the same time, Applied Numeracy for Business will give you the confidence to develop the mathematical and numerical skills used for decision making and problem solving for businesses. To diversify your learning, you will also be provided with a range of skills for leadership, entrepreneurship, marketing, management analysis, strategy setting and finance in our Management in Practice unit.
In your second year, Data and Research Methods for Business will provide you with the knowledge and skills to conduct research and analyse data in a business context. It is also important that you are adaptable to change in business environments, and this is where our Strategic Business Planning unit will allow you to understand how business growth and productivity is affected by change as well as how strategic planning can be used to maximise company growth. In terms of career development, our Employability and the Future Workplace unit will support you in developing the skills needed to prepare for interviews, psychometric tests and assessment centres. In addition, when working in business, it is also important that you build on your employability skills such as teamwork, time management, presentation and communication. This is where our Managing Business Complexity unit will support your development of these skills while exposing you to real-life, complex business issues and how to create viable solutions for clients based on this. Intercultural Management in Business will then allow you to explore the application of intercultural communication theories in an international business environment.
Emphasis is placed on developing intercultural interactive competence and introducing key aspects of managing behaviour and expectations across cultures. Another crucial skill in the business world is risk management, and this is where our Risk and Responsibility unit will develop your understanding of business challenges, responsible management and business ethics in a global context. Here, you will learn to apply risk management frameworks and risk mitigation strategies across systemic, financial, operational and strategic risks. In your final year, Innovation and Entrepreneurship will teach you to design innovative business models, discover how to start a new business and build your understanding on concepts of entrepreneurship. Whereas in Business Continuity and the Planet, you will tackle environmental issues that will allow you to investigate the strategic risks and challenges posed towards business operations including climate change, cybersecurity and supply chain risks.
Strategic Leadership will enable you to design realistic and practical strategies for businesses and identify trends while developing your employability skills. To add to this, you will be equipped with data manipulation techniques in our Data Driven Business unit while exploring trends and ethical concerns around data collection, use and analysis. Finally, you will conduct a thorough piece of academic research exploring evidence-based solutions for business problems in our Business Project unit that will allow you to gain a deeper understanding of the academic research paradigms. This course also aims to offer a range of employability and career opportunities through practice-based pedagogies utilising business cases, simulations and live projects - preparing you for the future workplace. At the same time, you will learn from our staff that have significant years of experience in the industry and have actively engaged in supporting SMEs through our Research and Innovation Services.
How will you be assessed?
Assessment takes a variety of forms including essays and reports portfolios individual and group presentations (individually assessed) research proposals and exams.
Many of the assessments are based on real case studies project work and other employability focused activities. Most units include elements of individual and group work to reflect the type of work undertaken in business and management.
Assessment focuses on tasks that develop vocational skills underpinned by subject knowledge requiring higher levels of cognition in the later years of the course.
Careers
On completing this course you are well placed to develop a career in human resources; e-business; operations/project management; and general management. You also have the entrepreneurial knowledge and skills you need to start your own business.
