About the course

Studying Mechanical Engineering will give you an in-depth technical training and professional accreditation to practice as a Mechanical Engineer.  

You will explore engineering design and take part in practical sessions at local manufacturing companies. There’s an emphasise on operating principles throughout this course, and design of mechanical systems such as wind turbines, thermal pumps and solar energy technologies.  

In your final year there will be a large element of independent study through projects and lab work. This will be based around renewable energy and power generation systems.  You will also have the opportunity to gain project management skills, helping you develop your employability skills once you graduate.

This scholarship is for students who achieve academic excellence in their studies prior to entering the University.  This scholarship is worth £1500 paid as £500 per year if the requested grades (given in the table) or their equivalents are achieved.  There is no application process.  The scholarship will be awarded automatically to those meeting the eligibility criteria.

This is a cash scholarship and will be delivered in two instalments per year, that is: £250 paid at the end of November (end of March for those registering in February) and £250 paid at the end of February (end of June for those registering in February).

Mechanical Engineering with Professional Practice Year - BEng (Hons)

  • This course has the option to be taken over four years which includes a year placement in industry. Undertaking a year in industry has many benefits. You gain practical experience and build your CV, as well as being a great opportunity to sample a profession and network with potential future employers.

    There is no tuition fee for the placement year enabling you to gain an extra year of experience for free.

Mechanical Engineering with Foundation Year - BEng (Hons)

  • A Degree with a Foundation Year gives you guaranteed entry to an Undergraduate course.

    Whether you’re returning to learning and require additional help and support to up-skill, or if you didn’t quite meet the grades to pursue an Undergraduate course, our Degrees with Foundation Year provide a fantastic entry route for you to work towards a degree level qualification.

    There is also a £500 Foundation Year Bursary available to UK students starting September 2018.


    With our guidance and support you’ll get up to speed within one year, and will be ready to seamlessly progress on to undergraduate study at Bedfordshire.

    The Foundation Year provides an opportunity to build up your academic writing skills and numeracy, and will also cover a range of subject specific content to fully prepare you for entry to an Undergraduate degree.

    This is an integrated four-year degree, with the foundation year as a key part of the course. You will need to successfully complete the Foundation Year to progress on to the first year of your bachelor’s degree.
