Why Numbers Matter in Everyday Life

An introduction to the importance of numeracy in social science. The session is intended to assist you in considering the role of numbers in understanding the social world.

This introductory lecture will enable you to learn and appreciate that:

  • numbers are a critical component of everyday life;
  • numbers can be created, represented and interpreted in society;
  • quantification can help us solve some complex issues.

This will involve learning some basic statistical concepts, defining what is meant by terms such as 'quantitative' and 'statistics' and seeing some real-life examples.
