About the course

This Master's course offers senior vehicle developers an in-depth technical training for the research and development of next-generation low-carbon or non-carbon vehicles.                                                                                                                 

The course focuses on new and emerging sustainable automotive technologies such as hybrid electric vehicles battery electric vehicles and fuel-cell vehicles.

Throughout the course you have the opportunity to use state-of-the-art design tools as well as advanced development and simulation tools to explore vehicle development design calibration and optimisation.

Our automotive engineering laboratory suite includes an engine test bed with full instrumentation; two advanced automotive engine demonstrators; various test rigs for vehicle aerodynamics materials and engineering structure; and a machining workshop. You also have access to 3D printers and a CAE lab.

Research Methodologies And Project Management

This unit introduces students to research and the methodologies used to underpin scientific work, data analysis, hypotheses establishment and artefact validation in understanding research in an appropriate subject discipline. The material in this unit is carefully designed to meet students’ needs and requirements for their programme of study along with essential project management skills to support their research activities. Students will be exposed to a wide variety of tools, techniques, methodologies and processes in the field of project management which encapsulate both modern and traditional approaches as an essential preparation for the dissertation stage. The unit also draws on expertise from other departments within the university including library services, the careers and employability service and the English language centre to support students in the best possible way.

Applied Heat Transfer, Thermofluids And Computational Fluid Dynamics

This unit is designed for you to acquire advanced knowledge, understanding and skill in applications and developments of heat transfer, principles of thermodynamics and fluid dynamics, thermodynamic processes and systems relating to thermofluids, with applications in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).

Advanced Vehicle Dynamics And Sustainable Vehicle Powertrain

This unit is designed for you to acquire advanced knowledge and understanding of vehicle dynamics, chassis system, powertrain technologies, including various electric powertrain technology. It is also to provide you opportunity to experience the process of producing preliminary designs for a whole chassis and power system or its sub-systems with their associated advantages and disadvantages.

Advanced Vehicle Electronics And Autonomous Driving Technology

This unit is designed for you to acquire knowledge and understanding of the role of advanced vehicle electronics, control systems, AI and autonomous driving technology and how those systems work.

Msc Project - Automotive Engineering For Electric Vehicles

The project unit is essential for you to use and develop comprehensive skills and knowledge gained from other units and from your wider educational and working background in a major integrative exercise. While working creatively under the appropriate guidance of a member of staff, you will generate an idea and demonstrate your ability to develop it further, producing a suitable artefact by applying your technical, analytical, practical and managerial skills in an integrated manner. You are required to emphasise on a topic which sufficiently reflects on the course you are studying.
The project unit is aiming at your ability to demonstrate that you have the appropriate level of intellectual skills (ability to synthesise, criticise, develop and integrate material that you have met in the taught units); to identify problems, analyse situations and develop solutions; to develop your project management skills to schedule your time and work and to schedule resources under supervision; to carry out and present in an organised way a substantial body of original work.

How will you be assessed?


A wide variety of teaching styles will be used throughout this course. The most important aspect will be that of a student-centred approach and the University will encourage students through relevant guidance to become an independent thinker who can take responsibility for their own learning and adapt to a wide variety of different situations within the context of Automotive Engineering.

The course makes use of traditional lectures and practical sessions as well as encouraging students to engage in various scenarios such as managing students own projects and achieving professional output through teamwork.

Course unit content such as lecture slides or practical sheets are made available electronically through the University’s virtual learning environment.

To aid curriculum and assessment design the University uses the FHEQ credit level descriptors as points of reference for determining progression in terms of level of demand and complexity and the degree of learner autonomy involved in specific learning opportunities.

On completing the course you should have a theoretical and practical understanding of how new and emerging technologies will be used in the automotive industry with a specific focus on electric vehicles. It gives you the specific knowledge and skills to progress in design production and research and development as well as the attributes for life-long learning – so important in this fast-evolving field.
