We are 1st in the UK for successful graduate social-enterprise start-ups still trading after three years; 2nd in the UK for all business start-ups (HESA, 2024).

We are a Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) accredited centre.

In 2023/24, our Business School students engaged with real-life businesses around 7,000 times, using their knowledge and skills to support live projects

About the course

This course builds your understanding and practical skills in general business management subjects such as strategy, policy design, innovation and entrepreneurship while exploring the business practices reshaping current business models. You explore key areas of human resource management (HRM) such as employee relations, leadership and motivation, and recruitment, developing your understanding of how HRM works with other business disciplines.

with Professional Practice Year

This course has the option to be taken over four years which includes a year placement in industry. Undertaking a year in industry has many benefits. You gain practical experience and build your CV, as well as being a great opportunity to sample a profession and network with potential future employers.

There is no tuition fee for the placement year enabling you to gain an extra year of experience for free.

with Foundation Year

A Degree with a Foundation Year gives you guaranteed entry to an Undergraduate course.

Whether you’re returning to learning and require additional help and support to up-skill, or if you didn’t quite meet the grades to pursue an Undergraduate course, our Degrees with Foundation Year provide a fantastic entry route for you to work towards a degree level qualification.

With our guidance and support you’ll get up to speed within one year, and will be ready to seamlessly progress on to undergraduate study at Bedfordshire.

The Foundation Year provides an opportunity to build up your academic writing skills and numeracy, and will also cover a range of subject specific content to fully prepare you for entry to an Undergraduate degree.

This is an integrated four-year degree, with the foundation year as a key part of the course. You will need to successfully complete the Foundation Year to progress on to the first year of your bachelor’s degree.

What will you study?


Studying our Business Management with HRM BSc (Hons) course will equip you with in-depth skills and knowledge in the combined areas of business management and human resource management. Embedded within the course design is an opportunity for you to develop research skills, employability skills, analytical and problem-solving skills, professional and responsible behaviours, and be transformed into knowledgeable and effective managers in any working environment within a human resource (HR) context. You will engage with practice-based pedagogies utilising business cases, simulations, and live projects that will prepare you for the future workplace. In your first year, you will receive support in Beginning your Professional Business Journey. that will help to ease your transition into university and provide an insight into professional business environments. Evolution and Revolution of Business will allow you to explore how businesses operate, develop, progress and impact society. Furthermore, this unit examines how certain business trends have evolved over time. Our unit in Applied Numeracy for Business will give you the confidence to develop the mathematical and numerical skills used for decision making and problem solving for businesses.

To diversify your learning, you will also be provided with a range of skills for leadership, entrepreneurship, marketing, management analysis, strategy setting and finance in our Management in Practice unit. In Year 2, in our unit Data and Research Methods for Business this will provide you with the knowledge and skills to conduct research and analyse data in a business context. It is also important that you are adaptable to change in business environments, and this is where our Strategic Business Planning unit will allow you to understand how business growth and productivity is affected by change as well as how strategic planning can be used to maximise company growth. In terms of career development, our Employability and the Future Workplace unit will support you in developing the skills needed to prepare for interviews, psychometric tests and assessment centres. In addition, when working in business, it is also important that you build on your employability skills such as teamwork, time management, presentation and communication.

This is where our Managing Business Complexity unit will support your development of these skills while exposing you to real-life, complex business issues and how to create viable solutions for clients based on this. Strategic Context of HRM and People Resourcing and Development units explore the role HR function plays in an organisation and the framework for managing people that contribute to better organisational culture and performance. Another crucial skill in the business world is risk management – and this is where our Risk and Responsibility unit will develop your understanding of business challenges, responsible management and business ethics in a global context. Here, you will learn to apply risk management frameworks and risk mitigation strategies across systemic, financial, operational and strategic risks.

In your final year, our Innovation and Entrepreneurship unit will teach you to design innovative business models, discover how to start a new business and build your understanding on concepts of entrepreneurship. Contemporary Issues in the Workplace and Developing Professional Human Resource Management Practice provides a practice-based approach to develop knowledge and understanding in HR practices and policies. More importantly, you will be equipped with data manipulation techniques in our Data Driven Business unit while exploring trends and ethical concerns around data collection, use and analysis. Finally, you will conduct a thorough piece of academic research exploring evidence-based solutions for business problems in our Business Project unit that will allow you to gain a deeper understanding of the academic research paradigms. At the same time, you will learn from our staff that have significant years of experience in the industry and have actively engaged in supporting SMEs through our Research and Innovation Services.

How will you be assessed?


Assessment takes a variety of forms including essays and reports portfolios individual and group presentations (individually assessed) research proposals and exams.

Many of the assessments are based on real case studies project work and other employability focused activities. Most units include elements of individual and group work to reflect the type of work undertaken in business and management.

Assessment focuses on tasks that develop vocational skills underpinned by subject knowledge requiring higher levels of cognition in the later years of the course. 

Careers


The course opens opportunities for you to become a general business manager or operations/project manager. You can also develop your career in your specialist area moving into human resources; digital and e-business; financial analysis; international operations; and business analytics.

You may like to progress to a related taught Master’s courses such as our Business Administration (MBA) MSc Project Management and MSc Sustainable Management. We also offer research degree opportunities.
