Course Leader - Mick Dwyer

I have been a Lecturer in Sports Therapy within a number of educational settings since 2006, having qualified with a degree in Sports & Exercise Science with History from the University of Liverpool and a BSc in Sports Therapy from the, then named, University of Luton. Since gaining a PGCE, and MSc in Sports and Exercise Medicine, I have developed a keen interest in the Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) training and its beneficial adaptation to athlete recovery through rehabilitation. I became a full-time Lecturer in Sports Therapy at the University of Bedfordshire in 2018. I love teaching, delivering practical manual therapy sessions; and the community morale; which I strive to develop with my students to achieve high levels of engagement across the course. I find a creative and innovative approach to teaching is the most beneficial way of motivating and driving my students to achieve highly in a very competitive industry.

What will you study?

Anatomy And Biomechanics

This unit aims to:

  • Develop knowledge of the principles of human movement and the role of human anatomy in sport and exercise science
  • Develop knowledge of the fundamental principles of sport and exercise biomechanics, underpinned by research in the discipline.
  • Introduce the application of sports biomechanics to sports science practice, coaching, strength and conditioning, personal training and research.

Human Physiology

This unit aims to answer the questions:

Physiologically how do the fundamental systems of the human body respond at rest?

How does the human body adapt to exercise?

The unit serves as an introduction to the structure of the physiological systems and major organs of the body and rest and in relation to physical activity. Students will research the topics of interest through relevant and recent literature introduced in lectures and seminars to form the basis of written assignments.

Reading And Interpreting Research

This unit aims to provide an introduction to the process of research and enquiry and provides guidance on how to read and interpret scientific literature to enable an evidence-based approach to practice.

Sports Massage

This unit aims to equip students with an understanding of underpinning theories and the ability to safely apply and effectively justify the use of a range of soft tissue techniques in current practice

Structural Assessment And Professional Practice

This unit aims to equip students with an introduction to the practical application of their theoretical knowledge and practical skills in a work-based environment. They are also introduced to the concept of reflection and how this can be used to inform and develop their own practice. This unit provides the opportunity for the partial completion of the supervised practice placement that is required during the completion of the programmes.

Gym Instruction

The unit aims to teach the fundamental principles of exercise prescription and coaching within a gym setting and to be able to understand, demonstrate, and coach a range of exercise modalities that are currently adopted in health and fitness settings.

Normal Anatomical Structure And Function

This unit will provide you with an introduction to Anatomy, (focusing on structure, function, location and palpation) and kinesiology (looking at how the latter structures work together in normal movement and function)

Altered Anatomical Structure And Function

The aims of this unit are to develop knowledge of advanced human anatomical and biomechanical principles underpinning sport and clinical practice. This unit is primarily focused upon anatomical alterations created by a variety of health and lifestyle factors.

Manual Therapies

This unit aims to equip students with an understanding of underpinning theories and the ability to safely apply and effectively justify the use of a range of manual therapy in current practice.

Physiology For Training

This unit aims to further develop students’ understanding of the different physiological factors that influence sport and exercise performance, including how the human body responds and adapts to different types of environments and training in healthy and referred clients.

Planning And Conducting Research

This unit aims to assist students in gaining a more critical understanding of the research of others through the development of the processes of research and enquiry in sports science and medicine related subjects. To realise these aims, students will have the opportunity to develop the more complex statistical skills that will be required to enhance as a practitioner.

Professional Practice

This unit aims to equip students with the theoretical knowledge, practical skills and the ability to be reflective of their own personal development required to allow them to effectively undertake sport rehabilitation practice placement experiences. This unit provides the opportunity for the partial completion of the 400hrs of supervised practice placement experience required during the completion of the programme to gain eligibility to apply for full graduate membership with BASRaT and enter their accredited register.

Management Of Lower Extremity Injuries

This unit aims to equip students with the skills and understanding of underpinning theories required to safely and effectively assess the injured athlete in a sporting or clinical setting, whilst identifying and managing the pain-causing and/or injured lumbar & sacral regions and lower extremity structures.

Management Of Upper Extremity Injuries

This unit aims to equip students with the skills and understanding of underpinning theories required to safely and effectively assess the injured athlete in a sporting or clinical setting, whilst identifying and managing the pain-causing and/or injured thoracic & cervical vertebral regions and upper extremity structures.

Dissertation For Sport Science And Physical Activity

This unit is a structured independent study which involves selecting a topic that is approved by an appropriate staff member of the School of Sport Science and Physical Activity who will subsequently become your supervisor. You will conduct an in-depth scientific study of that topic. The topic chosen should be one that is of interest to you and is also deemed to be an important topic within the field of Sport Science and Physical Activity. You will be expected to engage in considerable independent scholarly activity, building upon the initial topic and reading material discussed with your supervisor. The topic chosen should relate to some aspect of the content and issues within an appropriate discipline, and should examine a limited area in depth rather than attempt any wide-ranging generalised investigation. You will be required to meet your supervisor on a regular basis to discuss your progress. You will be required to complete ethical documentation before you start your data collection. This will be reviewed by the Undergraduate School Ethics Committee via specific meetings throughout the unit.

Advanced Manual Therapies

This unit provides the opportunity for the partial completion of the 400 hours of supervised practice placement experience required during the completion of the programme to gain eligibility to apply for full graduate membership with BASRaT and enter their accredited register.

Corrective Exercise

This unit will develop the knowledge and skills of students to be able to evaluate movement screening tools in order to implement an accurate assessment of client musculoskeletal function. Students will be able to use the results of this screening assessment to safely and effectively design corrective exercise programmes to improve musculoskeletal dysfunction.

Sport Injury Prevention And Rehabilitation

This unit will aim to equip students with the ability to evaluate and differentiate an athlete’s individual dysfunction, injury and rehabilitation needs. This will allow for students to be able to safely and effectively identify and reduce the risk of potential injury, and when injury occurs to rehabilitate an athlete back to performance.

How will you be assessed?

Lectures seek to provide students with underpinning theoretical research informed knowledge to allow them to critically justify their clinically reasoned injury treatment and rehabilitation strategies.

Careers

After graduation you’ll be trained to take on a rewarding and challenging role in sports therapy and rehabilitation as an injury and exercise-based rehabilitation and fitness specialist. You will be capable of working in multi-disciplinary healthcare teams in both the public (NHS) and private sectors.

Graduate Mari who has cerebral palsy, ataxia and dystonia – achieved a degree in the School of Sports Science and Physical Education and had initially planned to set up her own business but instead became a full time athlete.
