About the course

The international tourism industry continues to grow and flourish increasing the need for senior planners and managers with the skills to tackle a broad range of global management issues.

From heritage, cultural, social, environmental and political matters, to questions concerning strategic management and sustainable development, this course will provide you with a critical overview of the subject.

You will gain the knowledge and skills to understand the role of critical evaluation techniques and decision-making strategies necessary to establish yourself and thrive in a senior management role.

Unit Information – What Will I Learn?

On this International Tourism Planning and Management course, you will undertake four 30 credit units and one 60 credit project unit. Our courses are designed engaging, attractive and flexible in the current global marketplace.

Your course takes place over three semesters. Depending upon when you join the course, this will determine the order of units which you will study. You will benefit by beginning your studies with others who started at one of the earlier points of entry.

The structure provides an intense and highly rewarding learning experience. The induction week will prepare you well for study on your course. You will then study only one unit at a time, which will enable you to focus upon the subject. Our evidence-based approach is designed to enhance engagement and success by applied practice, working with others and network development. The learning delivery takes place through a mix of interactive lectures, seminars, tutorials and lab sessions, along with guided learning, independent and autonomous learning. This emphasis on active learning uses the latest in teaching and learning approaches, integrated with our employability practice-based method with real businesses to enable you to gain real experience as part of your course.

Capstone project

This Master's course provides the opportunity to undertake different types of project, a "Capstone" experience which completes the integration of your studies applied in one of the following:

  • Professional Practice - the central aim of this unit is to provide you with a thorough understanding of the commercial context in which organisations operate. By reflecting upon your existing knowledge and experience you will be required to respond to a number of work-based scenarios through critical evaluation to determine an appropriate course of action.
  • The Live Project - this will enable you to work as part of a team on a project provided by a business organisation. The exact nature of the level of work, and nature of responsibility will depend upon the chosen organisation. However, there will be close negotiation between the company and the Business School.
  • The dissertation - this is a conventional dissertation of 12,000 to 15,000 words, enabling you to undertake in-depth research of a topic relating to your course. It will consist of research question, aims and objectives, rationale for undertaking the study, literature review, research methodology, analysis of findings, conclusions and recommendations.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment methods

A number of different assessment methods will contribute to your development and will enhance your employability. We consider it essential that comprehensive feedback is provided in due time so it is integrated in your learning process. When group work is required, the marks given will be individual following the University of Bedfordshire’s regulatory scheme.

Welcome and induction activities will be followed immediately by a week of intensive direct contact time followed by your own contribution through individual learning, which will take you to your first assessment point. At the end of your six-week block, your final assessment will be due.

Types of assessment

The assessment you complete will depend on the units you choose. As far as possible, assessment across units has been designed to give you experience of a wide range of assessment tools. There are two assessments across most units. The first assessments usually require you to carry out a presentation or submit a report at an early stage of the unit and carry a lower weighting than the final assessment.

The second assessments are usually longer and involve elements such as further reflection, critical review of a body of literature, critical analysis of any data sought, reference to wide ranging policies, engagement with current debates, analysis of weaknesses and identification of solutions.

Assessment feedback

In order to support student learning, monitor performance and provide appropriate feedback, formative (0 weighted or non-graded) tasks are designed such as in class discussion, debate, group work and case study presentation. The provision of formative feedbacks is on-going, along the week where the formative assessment has been set. The provision of formative feedback is therefore built into the learning experience.

Summative feedback on assessments will be provided within 10 days of the submission date.

Extra costs for this course

Throughout your course there are opportunities for extra-curricular activities and learning experiences.

These activities are optional but are an important part of the learning experience.

The events are available to both our undergraduate and postgraduate students.

The Department of International Business, Marketing & Tourism support and fund the majority of these activities but there is some need for students to make contributions.

The extra costs are normally £20 - £50 for local events and £75 - £200 for overseas events.

Facilities

Our flagship £34m Campus Centre is funky and functional. It brings together all our student services, social and learning spaces, and a 240-seat lecture theatre under one roof.

The Campus Centre building is connected to the rest of the University and the first floor acts as a one-stop shop for all students services.

Designed for work as well as play, the Campus Centre incorporates relaxed learning zones with Wi-Fi access.

It also features the Students' Union support services and executive offices alongside places to eat

Luton is the largest town in Bedfordshire and is approximately 50km north of London.
