About the course
On this combined course, you gain an in-depth knowledge of the core areas of the English legal system alongside exploring the fascinating fields of criminal, investigative and forensic psychology. It is your first step to qualifying as a solicitor or progressing to a career at the Bar while also developing skills you might use for professional roles in the criminal justice system, such as those needed to be a forensic practitioner.
Course accreditation
All our LLB courses cover the Foundation of Legal Knowledge subjects and satisfy the requirements set by the Bar Standards Board for the academic component of Bar training. Upon successfully completing the LLB with a minimum grade of 2:ii, graduates who wish to qualify as barristers will be able to progress on to the Bar training course.

You gain practical experience and build your CV, as well as being a great opportunity to sample a profession and network with potential future employers.

The Foundation Year provides an opportunity to build up your academic writing skills and numeracy, and will also cover a range of subject specific content to fully prepare you for entry to an Undergraduate degree.

Studying our Law with Psychology LLB (Hons) course will equip you with the knowledge and skills in the combined areas of law psychology and human behaviour. In areas of criminology, you will be introduced to the criminal process in England and Wales as well as explore categories of criminal behaviour in our Criminal Law unit. You will explore circumstances in which individuals may be prosecuted or plead defences, examine elements of different crimes and learn the principles, norms and social functions of criminal law. To deepen your understanding of criminal behaviour, our Psychology and Criminal Behaviour unit will cover a range of compelling issues, theories and research in criminal and forensic psychology. This will help you understand the contexts in which criminal behaviour occurs and subsequently learn to assess and rehabilitate various types of offenders based on different types of crime including stalking, violence and terrorism.
To effectively rehabilitate offenders within the prison system, our Applied Forensic Psychology unit will teach you to investigate and evaluate various treatment and rehabilitation programmes for both people in custody and for those following release from custody to prevent relapses in behaviour. These concepts will allow you to then discuss psychology in a broader context, such as in the English and Welsh Criminal Justice System that is taught in our Psychology and Criminal Justice unit. Here, you will learn how this science contributes to law-making processes, enforcement and prosecution in criminal justice settings. In other core areas of study, you will be introduced to various units including Contract Law where you will learn how contracts are formed and regulated, as well as the legal issues that arise when contractual relationships break down. Separately, you will explore the nature of property and ownership rights in relation to land in our Land Law unit, while also exploring the role of Tort in a societal context in our Law of Tort unit through engaging with and critically analysing case law.
To add to the foundations of your law study, you will be introduced to Constitutional and Administrative Law where you will learn of the UK’s constitution and the impact that the European Union and Council of Europe has on this. On the other end, you will also gain a solid understanding of European Union law and politics in our Fundamentals of EU Law unit which is crucial for future lawyers who may deal with legal issues raised by Brexit. If you are passionate about Family and Child Law, this unit will allow you to explore legal issues around adult relationships, such as divorce or domestic violence, and regulating children’s life situations such as in the case of children’s rights, child protection, adoption and parental responsibility. To add to this, you will also be introduced to the nature, creation, purpose and enforcement of trusts in our Equity and Trusts unit.
To assist you in practice, you will be provided with a solid understanding of the English Legal System while developing your professional legal skills in our Academic and Legal Skills unit. This is crucial in supporting your ability to find and use legal sources, process this information, prepare and apply legal materials and to identify, read and present legal cases. Finally, you will complete a Dissertation into an area of public interest by analysing and evaluating a range of legal research under the guidance of a supervisor.
The course has been carefully designed to develop a wide range of academic legal and practical skills including by giving you the opportunity to engage with a varied range of assessment methods. A developing range of assessments will enable you to grow in confidence and demonstrate your acquisition of knowledge and skills.
The assessment methods used across the course include:
- Written assignments: These may vary from short essays and reports to more in-depth research work on broader topics to problem questions and case studies which will require you to apply your legal knowledge to a `real life scenario. These assessments will test your ability to analyse an issue to conduct research to collect relevant materials to assess the quality of the materials and to synthesise them into a scholarly answer.
- Examinations: These will test your ability to convey your knowledge and understanding of a topic and to demonstrate your skills of analysis and evaluation in a time-sensitive manner.
- Oral presentations: Aimed at developing your public-speaking skills and testing your verbal and presentational skills in communicating information in a professional setting. Mooting activities will test your ability to carry out research and present your findings in a persuasive and authoritative manner. They will also introduce the practical skills of court etiquette and procedure.
In the final year of your course the dissertation unit will allow you to undertake a complex research project in a subject area of your choosing. With the support of your supervisor you will be expected to formulate a relevant and viable research question. The project will allow you to further develop your legal research skills and the ability to communicate knowledge findings and recommendations.
Careers
For students who aim to get into the legal professions this course is your first step towards professional qualification to become a solicitor or to practice at the Bar.
Even without acquiring further professional qualifications the course provides a solid foundation for access to a range of graduate roles in the legal sector for instance as a paralegal or member of court staff; in the civil service (whether in local or central government); or in third-sector organisations working with offenders and victims of crime.
Alongside these career tracks the course prepares you for a career in a broader range of graduate roles within the criminal justice system including in the police prison administration and other law enforcement agencies.
In addition by allowing you to explore psychology alongside your qualifying law degree it will open up career opportunities in a range of other professional areas including youth justice and youth work; victim support and mental health advocacy; and the charity sector.
This course will also provide you with the necessary research and critical analysis skills which you will need if you choose to pursue further study at Master’s level and beyond.
