Dr Barry Haggett

Barry Haggett

Senior Lecturer in Chemistry

I am a chemist by training and joined the university in 1989. Most of my time was spent in the University’s former Institute of Research in the Applied Natural Sciences (LIRANS) undertaking contract-based research, but I joined the School of Life Science teaching staff in 2011.

Teaching Expertise

I try to draw on my experience of working with industry in subjects that I teach: foundation chemistry for first year students (BSc Biological Science, BSc Biomedical Science, BSc Forensic Science) and forensic analysis for forensic science students. For MSc Biotechnology students I teach analytical methods and introduce concepts of intellectual property protection.

I am the School’s employability champion and try to ensure that all of our students recognise the importance of developing and providing evidence of non-specialist skills and attributes that employers look for in their (prospective) employees.

Research Interests

My research interests centre on the development of chemical sensors and biosensor systems. For the most part, this work has been undertaken with and for sponsors such as Johnson & Johnson, Kellogg, Kodak, Nestlé, Porton International, Oxoid, Shell, Unilever, Unipath and Yorkshire Water.
