Research in social work and social care

The Tilda Goldberg Centre for Social Work and Social Care (TGC) is one of the few research centres undertaking experimental and quasi-experimental research. This includes a randomised controlled trial (RCT) of motivation interviewing in child protection.

This builds on an evaluation of the systemic approach to child welfare practice (the ‘Hackney model’ or ‘Reclaiming Social Work’) that was influential in developing the new approach to social work education known as Frontline.

Continuing TGC’s initial focus on alcohol and drug use, the Centre’s Substance Abuse and Ageing Team has recently been selected by the Big Lottery Fund to evaluate its £25m initiative to improve services to older problem drinkers.

Centre staff are working in association with Addaction, one of the largest UK charities specialising in drug and alcohol treatment.
