Additional Funding Support for Healthcare Students

Information from NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA)
for University healthcare and paramedic students

The government recently announced that additional funding support will be made available to all new and current pre-registration students on nursing, midwifery and some allied health professional courses including paramedic courses from September 2020.

This means all eligible students will receive at least £5,000. Some will receive additional payments of up to £3,000. This covers students in regions or specialisms struggling to recruit and those who need help to cover childcare costs.

The grant, which will not need to be repaid, comes as part of the government's manifesto commitment to increase nurse numbers up to 50,000 by 2025. It is expected to benefit more than 35,000 students every year.

Students will still access funding from SLC for tuition and maintenance loans, and the NHSBSA to apply for the existing Learning Support Fund. You can read the full announcement on the GOV.UK website

The NHSBSA Student Services department will be responsible for administering this funding on behalf of the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC). They are working together to set out the details for how students will access this additional support.

NHSBSA will update its website and social media channels with more information as soon as it becomes available. You can also sign up to receive NHSBSA bulletins on their website, indicating an interest in the Learning Support Fund.

NHSBSA is planning on holding some stakeholder events next year to explain the funding in more detail. More information about these will become available in the New Year, please check their website for further details.
