MyEngagement

The MyEngagement system (StREAM from Kortext) has gradually been introduced across the university. This system makes it easy to identify students who are actively engaged in their studies and those who may be at risk of falling behind. MyEngagement provides insights needed to have informed conversations, make timely interventions and help teaching and learning staff assess what’s working to make data-driven decisions and support the student journey. We have recently upgraded MyEngagement to 4.7.0, this is the latest version and includes brand new exciting features to improve user experience.

FAQs
MyEngagement brings all the data that we need into one place making it much easier to spot students needing extra support.
The systems give you the insights you need to have informed conversations, make timely interventions, get ahead of any problems, and provide support and encouragement to students who need it most.
It will also put mitigations in place to help the student re-engage and continue with their studies successfully.
MyEngagement measures student engagement through an algorithm that tracks interactions with various university systems, such as logins to BREO, access to course materials, library usage, and video lectures through Panopto. Each type of interaction is weighted differently, with activities that more directly relate to learning (e.g., accessing course content) being given higher points than others like basic logins. These interactions are compiled into a daily engagement score, which is then averaged over different periods, such as a week or 28 days.
MyEngagement uses an algorithm to measure the engagement activities mentioned above. This algorithm categorises students into various engagement levels—none, very low, low, partial, high, and very high—which are visible to the students, their tutors, and pastoral teams. The engagement score reflects the student's activity over the past week, up to the previous day. Additionally, an average score can be assigned over a configurable date range (typically 28 days).
Tutors can view the engagement category of each student they are responsible for through the MI Dashboard.
Each university customises its MyEngagement algorithm to align with its strategic priorities. The vendor: Solutionpath collaborates with UoB to determine the weightings for different resources to establish a data model that meets their needs. You can view the weighting distribution for our institution on the Resources tab within any student record.

Engagement levels range from "None" to "Very High" and are updated daily based on recent activities. The system compares a student’s activities over the past week to their historical data to determine if they are consistent, improving, or declining in engagement. These levels can be accessed by students, tutors, and pastoral teams through the MyEngagement dashboard, providing insights into student performance.
MyEngagement collects data from interactions with digital learning environments like BREO logins, BREO course access, BREO mobile logins, library usage (physical book loans), campus swipes and Panopto. This data is already collected by the university as part of routine educational activities and is used to generate engagement scores. All data is handled securely, in line with university privacy policies.
Tutors can use MyEngagement to monitor the engagement levels of their students through the MI Dashboard. This information helps identify students who may need additional support or intervention, especially if a drop in engagement suggests potential academic or personal challenges.
Students will only appear on MyEngagement from their Effective Start Date. This means that those with start dates in the future will not be visible until their course begins. This practice helps reduce unnecessary notifications and ensures that only active students receive engagement-related communications.
Current and interrupted students will be visible on the dashboard. In other words, students who began their studies prior to the start date, such as those with a future start date, will remain inactive on the platform until that time.
Students may not appear on MyEngagement for various other reasons. Should you encounter any issues, please email MyEngagement@Beds.ac.uk
If engagement falls into the "Low" or "Very Low" categories, students may receive an automated notification prompting reviews of all activities or out-reach for support. The aim is to identify students who might be struggling and to provide timely help through academic or pastoral services.
Updates to staff or student information, such as changes in course or contact details, must be made in the university’s SITS/eVision system. These changes will automatically reflect in MyEngagement after an overnight update cycle.
