Professor Anthony Green
Professor of Language Assessment
I am the Director of CRELLA and Professor of Language Assessment. I was the President of the International Language Testing Association (ILTA) in 2015-16 and am an Expert Member of both the European Association for Language Testing and Assessment (EALTA) and the Association of Language Testers in Europe (ALTE).
As well as leading projects researching many aspects of language assessment, I have extensive experience as a teacher, materials writer and teacher trainer and have worked in all areas of practical test development and delivery including as a test designer, item writer and examiner for tests of speaking and writing skills.
Research and consultancy
I have recently led projects relating examinations to frameworks such as the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages; developing reference level descriptions for English (English Profile); developing English Language tests including Password and EnglishScore; defining and promoting assessment literacy among teachers; and evaluating the impact of assessment systems.
My books include Exploring Language Assessment and Testing (Routledge), Language Functions Revisited and IELTS Washback in Context (both Cambridge University Press). I regularly publish on language assessment issues and serve on the editorial boards of Assessment in Education, Language Testing, Assessing Writing, Language Assessment Quarterly and Language Testing in Asia.
I research the assessment of language skills, especially written language; the use and impact of assessment results and the relationships between assessment, learning and teaching. I have received grants from a wide range of organisations such as the British Council, Cambridge English, the Eiken Foundation (Japan), LTTC (Taiwan), EU Erasmus+, the UK General Medical Council and the UK Civil Aviation Authority.
I have developed and taught a number of postgraduate courses in applied linguistics and language assessment including at the University of Cambridge, Oxford Brookes University and London Metropolitan University. I currently teach on the Assessment and Accreditation module of University of Bedfordshire’s Masters in TESOL programme and regularly deliver workshops and short courses for national examinations boards, testing organisations, universities and teacher associations.
I supervise doctoral students in such areas as assessment literacy, standard setting, the assessment of writing, reading, speaking and listening, skills and test impact. Many of my former students have gone on to build successful careers in this field. I would welcome research proposals in any of these areas, but also in other aspects of language learning and assessment.
I am regularly invited to speak at national, regional and global conferences and I have recently given keynote presentations on the Common European Framework of Reference.
