Carlota Larrea

Carlota received a BA Hons in English and German from the Universidad de Deusto, Bilbao, Spain, and a PhD in Comparative Literature from the Pennsylvania State University in the USA.

Her thesis analysed the relationship between postmodern fiction and Hollywood film in the work of Spanish, German and American writers. She has taught in Germany, Spain and the USA and has lived in the UK since 1992.

Her teaching experience is wide ranging, from languages, to literature, to film studies and media theory. Units taught include Cinema Cultures, Key Themes in Television Studies, Understanding Media, as well Spanish, German and English language and literature in the early stages of her career.

Carlota has extensive experience in course development and management, having written and coordinated degrees in humanities and media. She has been external examiner in the areas of languages and media at a number of HE institutions, including University of the Arts, Kingston University, University of Wales, MSA Cairo, Swansea, and has examined and supervised PhDs and MAs.

Carlota is on the editorial board of the International Journal of Iberian Studies and is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Her publication record includes articles and chapters on Spanish literature and cinema, gender, and film, and she regularly presents at national and international conferences.

Carlota’s passion is cinema, and she is a trustee for Cinema for All and head of programming for Hitchin Films. She enjoys organising film events at the University and for the community cinema where she has volunteered since 2013.
