Shane Wesley Sylvester

LLB (Hons) Law, 2014

Legal Analyst

What did you enjoy the most during your course?

I enjoyed attending seminars as I was able to get more of an individual assessment on my essay and general writing style. I enjoyed mooting as it boosted my confidence when it came to speaking publicly to large crowds.

What were the most important skills you developed during your course and how did these help you in your career?

Along with understanding the law, the most important skill I developed was commercial awareness along with an understanding of how gaining an LLB (Hons) Law degree would open new doors.

Did you participate in any extra-curricular activities during your studies at Bedfordshire?

I was the President of the University’s Law Association and the University's Ambassador at Aspiring Solicitors, an organisation committed to increasing diversity in the legal profession. These two roles helped me network with highly regarded professionals in the legal sector.

Why did you choose the University of Bedfordshire?

I came to the University of Bedfordshire through Clearing.

What is a typical day at work?

I currently work for a Silver Circle law firm which has been a good opportunity to improve my chances of gaining a reputable training contract. A typical day at work involves working with senior solicitors and managers and attending meetings with senior professionals from other jurisdictions. I also assist with billing matters to time-record individual tasks with different clients and project to charge per hour at the end of each day. There are many tight deadlines to adhere to and this can be challenging but very rewarding.

What would be your advice to students starting their course now?

Make sure to do as much volunteering as possible and try to network with as many senior professionals as possible.

What are your future career plans?

I would like to become a solicitor but would also consider going into a technical position as the legal sector is going through some drastic changes in technology. I would relish either opportunity.
