Undergraduate UK students

Full–time UK Students 2017/18 entry

Student Maintenance Loan – 'Living cost loan'

UK and EU students can apply for a UK Government loan. The amount that you will receive is based upon your household income.

Student loans of up to £8,430 per year are available for students living away from home and, for those students who are living at home during their studies, up to £7,097 is available per year.

The loan is repayable, which means that after you have left university and when you are earning over £21,000 you will begin making repayments.

Student Tuition Fees Loan

Students can borrow all or part of their tuition fees from the Student Loans Company (SLC).

The SLC will pay the fee directly to the University on the student's behalf.

This loan is repaid by the student, once they have completed their studies and are earning a minimum of £21,000.

The new tuition fee system for UK/EU students means that neither you or your parents have to pay the fees up front – it's pay as you earn, not pay as you learn!

Am I eligible?

To qualify for the standard student finance package, on the first day of your course UK students must:

  • have been 'ordinarily resident' in the UK for the three years immediately before starting the course, other than wholly or mainly for the purpose of receiving full–time education
  • be 'ordinarily resident' in England
  • have 'settled status' within the UK (under the terms of the Immigration Act 1971)

EU students can apply for financial help if:

  • you are an EU national or a family member of an EU national
  • you have been living within the EEA and Switzerland for the three years immediately before the start of your course
  • your main reason for being in the EEA and Switzerland was not to receive full–time education

University of Bedfordshire Bursaries and Scholarships

The University of Bedfordshire offers a wide range of generous bursaries and scholarships to support you in your studies. See the scholarships and bursaries section for more details.

Social Work Bursary

This bursary is available to students who are ordinarily resident in England and who are on an approved non-graduate or undergraduate course (full time or part time).

The bursary is non-income assessed, which means that sources of income are not taken into account. The amount is dependent on individual circumstances.

NHS Students

The way some healthcare courses are funded is changing from 1 August 2017.

If you're starting a Nursing, Midwifery or included Allied Health Professional (AHP) course on or after 1 August, you'll need to apply to the Student Loans Company for your tuition fees and maintenance loan. It can take 6 - 8 weeks for your application to be assessed, so ensure you have access to enough money to meet your living and travel costs at the beginning of your course.

Eligible students may also be able to receive additional funding for child dependants.

Students in receipt of a student loan may be eligible to receive additional funding support through the Learning Support Fund, and if in extreme hardship once having exhausted all other means of funding, they can apply to the Exceptional Support Fund.
