CRiL Director Dr Silvia Borelli publishes pathbreaking volume on cultural diversity and cultural heritage

Dr Silvia Borelli, CRiL Director and Principal Lecturer in International Law in the School of Law, has this week published a volume entitled Cultural Heritage, Cultural Rights, Cultural Diversity: New Developments in International Law (Martinus Nihoff, 2012), jointly edited with Professor Federico Lenzerini of the University of Siena. BISC research seminar by Dr Prithwiraj Nath from University of East Anglia

Dr Prithwiraj Nath, Senior Lecturer, University of East Anglia, presented an interesting research talk titled "E-Store Attributes and Website Usage: A process view", at Luton on 28 June 2012. He explained an experiment to understand the effects of website design features on website usage when buyers differ in their willingness to process information. His study found a positive association between features and decision-making outcomes.

The topic was very relevant to staff not only from the department of management and business systems but also for the larger academic community in the business school. The seminar was well attended from a number of staff and PhD students across the business school and was well appreciated.

BISC seminar 'Role of information exchange in supply chain collaborations'

Dr Usha Ramanathan, Senior Lecturer in Business Systems, delivered an interesting seminar titled "Role of information exchange in supply chain collaborations" on 20 March 2012. She focused on how to improve the forecast accuracy of promotional products when related supply chain information (such as type of promotion, duration, price etc.) is available.

Dr Ramanathan discussed the use of various quantitative modelling methodologies, such as regression and structural equation modelling, for forecasting. She also discussed some case studies with a soft drink manufacturer and a textile manufacturer.

The seminar was attended by several staff and students from the business school.

The seminar was very useful to staff and students engaged in (i) promotional sales and forecasting, (ii) supply chain information (iii) case study research and/or (iv) quantitative research.

Statistics Workshop

Professor Muralidharan Kunnummal from The Maharajah Sayajirao (MS) University of Baroda, India, provided a one day workshop on statistical analysis, inferential statistics and hypothesis testing for staff and research students in the business school on 23 February 2012.

Professor Muralidharan Kunnummal is a Professor of Statistics at MS University. He is the Head of Department of Statistics and Director, Population Research Center at the University. Professor Kunnummal is visiting the business school on the prestigious Commonwealth Fellowship sponsored by the British Council.

The workshop covered a range of important topics from basic statistics to hypothesis testing and multivariate analysis. Eighteen staff and research students attended this full day workshop.

Participants provided excellent feedback. They felt that the workshop was very beneficial for their current research in enhancing their data analysis skills and in increasing their confidence in using statistical techniques in the future.

BISC Professor in Brussels to review a FP7 Project

Professor Yanqing Duan, Director of Business and Information Systems Research Centre (BISC), was invited as an expert to conduct a midterm review on a FP7 project aiming to facilitate knowledge transfer and innovation in food processing.

The four year "Network of Excellence" project is the first European Food Processing NoE project. It has 22 partners from 11 countries and a €7m budget. Working with another international expert and an EC officer, the review team spent three days in Brussels to exchange their views on project deliverables and reports, meet and question the project coordinators and workpackage leaders, and provide consolidated feedback to the project team.

Professor Duan was very delighted to be involved in this exercise, which provided her with the opportunity to work with EC offers and relevant experts and, most importantly, to offer advice and suggestions for strengthening the project's final impact and achievements.
