A space technology awareness initiative could lead to industry experience opportunities for future Milton Keynes Data Science students.

The University of Bedfordshire Milton Keynes campus, in conjunction with the Satellite Applications Catapult, recently hosted the “Space for You!” showcase, where the Milton Keynes business sector was invited to see how experts and space start-ups can make real use of space technologies.

Through a series of talks and demonstrations, businesses were shown how satellite technology can collect data in relation to the challenges – such as water and energy consumption, and transport – Milton Keynes faces as the city expands and its population grows.

The event was part of the MK:Smart project, which is working to develop innovative technology solutions to support the city’s economic growth. At the heart of the project is the MK Data Hub at Milton Keynes campus, which will collect and process vast amounts of data produced by data sources, including satellite communications.

And students enrolled on to the  new Data Science course – set to start in September 2014 – could be presented with the opportunity of internships and placements through the MK Data Hub.

Dr Paul Sant, Associate Dean of Milton Keynes campus, said: “I am delighted we are playing a part in promoting the opportunities the space industry has to offer. Our new Data Science students will be able to gain valuable industry experience working on real life programmes through the MK Data Hub.

“And, for businesses, advancements in technology, new business models and reduced launch costs all mean that the space sector can provide unprecedented opportunities for developers and entrepreneurs. It is a great time to become an ‘astropreneur’.”

Sam Adlen, Head of Business Innovation at the Satellite Applications Catapult, added: “Satellite data offers an exciting range of opportunities for businesses.

“Milton Keynes, and particularly the MK:Smart project, has been very proactive in creating an environment in which satellite data sources can be exploited for the benefit of the council, businesses, entrepreneurs and the community.

“We look forward to continuing to work with the MK:Smart team and supporting anyone that wants to capitalise on the benefits satellite data can bring.”
