Sixth form students will get the chance to host a Luton radio station for the next two weeks, as part of an exclusive work placement at Radio LaB 97.1FM.

Starting on Monday 16 June, BTEC Radio Production students at Luton Sixth Form College will take to the air at the University of Bedfordshire’s community station, which reaches listeners across the county, and online.

Every day between 8am and 4pm, the students will present live programmes, featuring their own take on life, the latest news and events, and the greatest music to keep you entertained.

This partnership between Radio LaB 97.1FM and the Sixth Form College, when launched last year, was the first in the country to offer students such unrivalled access to professional broadcasting.

Terry Lee, the station’s Coordinator, said: “Radio LaB 97.1fm is more than just a radio station; it’s a platform for the young people of Luton and Bedfordshire to have a voice, and develop skills like speaking and listening, confidence and teamwork."

“As the University's community radio station, Radio LaB is committed to working in partnership with schools and colleges like Luton Sixth Form College. Following the success of last year's takeover, we are really excited to have them back for a second year, and we expect them to make some fun, memorable radio!”

Luton Sixth Form College Media Course Manager Andy Waterfield, will also get in on the act with a wake-up show each morning, playing music gold from the 60s, 70s and 80, as well as a few more recent hits.

Andy said: “This is an amazing opportunity for the students. They may only be 17 and 18 years old, but they have great confidence and professionalism. They’re a credit to the College and to Radio LaB.

“Students are keen to hear from listeners with feedback and music requests. Check out the Twitter feed @radiolab971fm.”

You’ll be able to listen-in by tuning your radio to 97.1FM, or via www.radiolab971fm.com

Radio LaB 97.1FM is one of only three community radio stations run by a university in the country.

Courses associated with Radio LaB 97.1FM include BA (Hons) Broadcast Journalism, where students are given the opportunity to work on the station.
