The University of Bedfordshire celebrated United Nations (UN) Day with the raising of the UN flag at the Luton campus on Friday 24 October.

The Mayor of Luton, Councillor Mohammed Farooq, unveiled the flag outside the Campus Centre, in front of local members of the UN Association (UNA) and the Mayor’s personal guests.

The chair of the Luton UNA branch, Dr Nazia Khanum OBE, who holds an Honorary Doctorate from the University, was also in attendance.

Trevor Evans, a member of United Nations Association (UNA) Harpenden, read out UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s Message for 2014.

The flag will fly outside the University for the week, which culminates in a keynote speech by the former UK Ambassador to the UN, Sir Jeremy Greenstock.

The visit of Sir Jeremy, Chair of the United Nations Association – UK, marks the growing relationship between the UNA and the University of Bedfordshire.

Sir Jeremy will discuss the role of the UN, and what it and other organisations can do to combat world conflicts and suffering.

Other speakers will also be present, including University Vice Chancellor Bill Rammell and local MP and Shadow International Development Minister Gavin Shuker. There will be opportunity to put questions to Sir Jeremy, Mr Rammell and Mr Shuker at the end of the evening.

The event takes place at 7:30pm on October 31 at the Postgraduate & CPD Centre, Luton campus. Refreshments will be served from 6.30pm.
