Over 2,000 local school children are journeying through the University of Bedfordshire’s Roald Dahl reading week this week (14th-18th Dec).

Made up of a series of interactive workshops and theatre performances, the week has been put on to encourage Luton’s children to become inspired readers.

Access Partnership Manager Roisin Kendall, who has led the organisation of the week-long activity, said:

“This is outreach in action, designed for local primary children in Luton to become engaged, enthused and inspired by the fantastic literary works of Roald Dahl.

“Through a series of plays and interactive workshops we aim to instil confidence and aspiration in reading and writing to support children to become independent readers outside of the school environment.”

One of the plays on show is a unique rendition of James and the Giant Peach, with the show – put on in collaboration with Novus Theatre – featuring a stage mocked up as… a giant peach.

It’s one of a number of Roald Dahl-themed goings out at the University’s during the week, with glass art installations mocking up the Luton campus, and staff, students and visitors dressing up as Roald Dahl characters.
