TV Production students from the University of Bedfordshire have been getting a taste of the world of work by shadowing successful graduates.

The students spent the day with graduates from the TV Production course to give them a feel for what it is like to work in the industry and what roles are on offer.

Recent graduate Kimberley Blackman spent the day with Katie Shore, who graduated from the TV Production course in 2013 before completing an MSc Digital Technologies

She is now a Production Assistant for financial broadcaster IG, directing and vision mixing live news.

Kimberley said: “Katie was fantastic. I watched her vision mix, direct and operate the sound desk. I also got to test out the equipment and I even had the chance to go in front of camera and act as a presenter.

“By getting this work experience, it has made me realise I do want to work in the gallery, possibly as a director or vision mixer. I also learnt that in this industry it is important to keep being persistent, and it is vital to know how to multi-task and learn a variety of different roles when you have the opportunity.”

Fellow TV Production student Joshua Harrop shadowed former student Stuart Pinfold, who is a Sound Engineer working on live news for Persian TV, part of BBC World Service, after graduating in 2007.

Stuart gave Joshua a tour around the galleries and studios where he works before Joshua got to see Stuart in action as he worked on the sounds level of a news bulletin.

Joshua said: “Work shadowing has really helped in deciding to take up a career with BBC being a sound engineer, and I would love to work with BBC doing a job like that.”

The University’s Course Coordinator for TV Production Kathryn Wolfe, said: “These shadowing opportunities show current students and recent graduates at first-hand how well our alumni are doing in the industry. It is inspiring to those who are studying and job seeking, opening up a world of employment possibilities and contacts.”
