A University of Bedfordshire sports science lecturer has been awarded a grant worth thousands of pounds to fund her research into human nutrition.

Lecturer in Sport Science & Physical Activity Dr Rebecca Jones, was awarded a grant of £5,000, part of a Drummond Pump Priming Award from the British Nutrition Foundation (BNF).

Dr Jones’ study aims to examine the effect of breakfast consumption and breakfast omission on the glucose and insulin response in adolescent girls.

Dr Jones said: “The support provided by the Drummond Pump Priming Fund is imperative in undertaking this research study. The data gathered as part of this investigation will provide essential information around breakfast consumption and omission in adolescence girls. I would like to thank the Drummond Memorial Fund for providing this opportunity.”

The BNF’s Pump Priming Awards aim to help newly-appointed university lecturers and research fellows in human nutrition to undertake the pilot work needed to generate data that can be used as the basis of a more substantial grant application.

BNF’s Science Director Sara Stanner said: “We are so pleased to once again offer the Pump Priming grants to one of the rising stars in the field of nutrition. Every year we receive so many interesting and worthy applications, making the selection process really tough. Applications are reviewed both internally by BNF and externally by selected members of the BNF Council, and in the end the ideas of these two research fellows in particular stood out for us all.”

The grant has been made possible through BNF’s management of the Drummond Memorial Fund, which was established in 1954 in memory of the work and contribution of Sir Jack Drummond, who made a significant contribution to developments in the application of nutrition science for public health.
