Staff and students from the School of Media and Performance create film Winterlong that premiered at the Edinburgh International Film Festival June 2018.

Winterlong is the story of a poacher living on the margins who is forced to change his feral ways when his estranged teenage son turns up unexpectedly on his doorstep. It stars Game of Thrones actor Francis Magee, Smack the Pony actress Doon Mackichan and Coronation Street actor Ian Puleston-Davies.

The film is the debut feature of Senior Lecturer in Media Arts David Jackson. It premiered at the Edinburgh International Film Festival on the 30 June 2018 and was nominated for The Michael Powell Award for Best British Feature Film. Some forty students from the University worked on the film, alongside staff from the School of Media & Performance, gaining first-hand experience of what it is really like to make a feature film. Film Production students took on roles such as production assistants and runners, while Performance students acted as extras, with some even having small speaking roles.
