The University of Bedfordshire and the Level Trust have launched the SMASH Easter Roadshow to provide a fun, educational outlet during half term for children affected by poverty in Luton.

In partnership with the Level Trust, the University’s Access and Outreach team have organised this Easter event which will include activities such as decorating miniature treasure boxes, making friendship bracelets and getting creative with LEGO blocks.

Between 6th and 14th April, the SMASH Easter Roadshow will be visiting three schools around Luton to deliver the programme – William Austin School, Surrey Street Primary and Farley Hill Juniors.

Rosin Kendall, the University’s Access and Outreach Manager, spoke about the programme and how it will help children in the town.

She said: “We are really proud to be working again with the Level Trust again. This amazing charity works with children in real need, supporting them to reach their full potential. The Easter SMASH roadshow will be showcasing our creative skills with craft-based activities which encourage children to think about their long term goals and potential future careers.”

The University has supported the SMASH programme for over five years. Last Easter, Bedfordshire helped with the ‘Flying High’ SMASH programme, aimed at enhancing the reading skills of local children during the school holidays.

Tina Edwards, School and Youth Project Lead at the Level Trust, said: “SMASH aims to provide disadvantaged children with fun activities during the school holidays that they may otherwise miss out on.

“Providing children with new activities, food and a goody bag to take away gives them opportunities to make new friends, build their confidence and learn about healthy eating. Most of all, it gives them an opportunity to have fun!”

Level Trust is a Luton-based charity, helping children aged 3-16 who are living in poverty to continue to reach their educational potential through a series of initiatives and projects alongside more than 60 schools in the area.
