The University of Bedfordshire is working to break down barriers to improve support for young adult carers in higher education, as part of a national initiative led by the Learning and Work Institute and Carers Federation, and funded by the National Lottery Community Fund.

Through the Driving Change in Higher Education project, the University is focusing on removing obstacles that young adult carers – those providing unpaid care for a family member or friend – often face when accessing and succeeding at university. As one of 25 participating institutions, Bedfordshire is committed to creating and embedding a whole-university approach that enables students with caring responsibilities to thrive in higher education and beyond.

The initiative also seeks to reach those who aspire to university but may be held back by the challenges of their caring roles.

The project is being led at the University by Jon Stanley, Head of Student Support; Rhequel Stephenson, Student Engagement and Welfare Advisor; and Paula Page, Outreach Manager. Together, they are working to ensure that young adult carers receive the recognition, resources, and encouragement they need to unlock their potential and succeed in their academic journeys.

Paula Page, who is one of the staff leading the project, said: “I’m looking forward to working with the Learning and Work Institute and the Carers Federation to support young carers in their transition to higher education. It’s vital we raise awareness within the University of the unique challenges young carers face as they balance their studies with caring responsibilities.”

The University’s involvement in Driving Change in Higher Education reflects its ongoing dedication to widening participation and improving access for underrepresented groups. By strengthening support for young adult carers, Bedfordshire aims to ensure that every student – regardless of their circumstances – can succeed.

Jon Stanley, Head of Student Support, added: “The University is committed to breaking down barriers and supporting students to achieve in their studies and beyond. We are aware that many students have caring responsibilities, and they do this without fully realising the extraordinary work they do, but also the impact it has on them, their personal life and also their academic journey.  We are determined to help them succeed, and we are delighted to be involved in the Driving Change project so that we can provide the gold standard support for these, and all our students.”
